Graceful Anemone Shrimp

Ancylomenes venustus

Guardian: Paul Myers

Anemone shrimp secrete a protective mucous which stops them getting stung to death and eaten by the anemone they live in.

To trigger the production of the mucous however, they have to get stung, so when an Anemone shrimp first finds its anemone or leaves it for any length of time it must deliberately stick its body in stinging tentacles and feel pain (for several hours) before enough mucous is made.

My question is who was the first Anemone shrimp, a brave hero? a young shrimp dared by his mates? a masochist who enjoyed feeling pain?
